President Donald Trump has selected Dr. Heidi Overton to become the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, putting a trusted White House policy adviser in line to take control of one of America’s most important health agencies.
Overton currently serves as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and has played a role in shaping the administration’s health agenda.
She must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before formally taking charge of the FDA.

Overton is a physician by training and previously worked for the conservative America First Policy Institute before joining the Trump administration.
Trump praised Overton while announcing his choice Wednesday, describing her as someone he trusts to handle difficult policy challenges and arguing that she can help preserve American leadership in medical innovation and scientific discovery.
Her selection places a close administration ally at an agency with enormous authority over prescription drugs, vaccines, medical devices, tobacco products and much of the nation’s food supply.
FDA Has Lost More Than 3,000 Employees
If confirmed, Overton will inherit an agency that has gone through extraordinary disruption.
More than 3,000 FDA employees have departed during the past year, according to Reuters, including senior officials and division leaders.
The losses occurred amid broader reductions across the Department of Health and Human Services and have fueled concerns about morale and the agency’s ability to retain scientific expertise.
Some industry observers have also raised questions about Overton’s limited experience running an organization comparable in size and complexity to the FDA.
The Senate confirmation process is likely to put those concerns under intense scrutiny.
Marty Makary Resigned From the FDA in May
Overton would replace former FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, who resigned in May after approximately 13 months in the position.
Makary’s tenure included disagreements with administration officials and drug manufacturers involving flavored vaping products, vaccines, pharmaceutical approvals and a proposed safety review of the abortion pill.
His departure added another layer of uncertainty to an agency already undergoing significant personnel and policy changes.
Vaccines and the Abortion Pill Await the Next Commissioner
The next FDA commissioner will immediately face some of the country’s most politically sensitive health-policy disputes.
The administration and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have been pursuing changes involving vaccine policy, while questions surrounding the abortion medication mifepristone remain highly contentious.
The FDA must simultaneously deal with its traditional responsibilities of reviewing new drugs and treatments while maintaining confidence among scientists, pharmaceutical companies, doctors and patients.
Those competing pressures make the FDA position one of the most consequential appointments in the federal health system.
Overton’s nomination now heads toward the Senate, where lawmakers will decide whether Trump’s longtime policy ally should be given responsibility for overseeing an agency whose decisions touch virtually every American.
