Sandra Bullock is sharing details about one of the hardest times in her life, talking about her longtime partner Bryan Randall’s private struggle with ALS and the emotional burden of keeping his diagnosis a secret.
On the SmartLess podcast, the Speed movie icon spoke openly about Randall’s illness and death. Bullock described the diagnosis as traumatic and explained that Randall had asked her not to share his condition with others.
Randall passed away in August 2023 at age 57 after a three-year fight with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Bryan Randall Asked Sandra Bullock to Keep His ALS Diagnosis Private
Bullock said she kept Randall’s illness private as he wished, even though it became harder for her over time.
“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it,” Bullock said of the situation, adding that keeping the illness private left her feeling isolated while she tried to manage the enormous reality facing their family.
Randall’s illness was even harder to manage because it happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many families were already facing isolation and uncertainty.
Bullock said she started grieving long before Randall passed away, as the disease slowly changed him and affected their family’s daily life.
Sandra Bullock Says Her Sorrow Started Years Before His Death
Bullock explained that Randall was ill for about half of the time they were together. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she said while describing the long emotional process surrounding the disease.
ALS is a disease that gradually damages the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement.
For Bullock, coping with the diagnosis affected not just her and Randall, but also their children, who had to adjust to the changes over time.
Bullock has two children, Louis and Laila, and Randall had a daughter named Skylar from a previous relationship. Bullock said it was especially hard because her daughter saw Randall as a father figure.
Only a Small Circle Knew What the Family Was Facing
At first, only a few people knew about Randall’s diagnosis, including Bullock’s sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado.
Later, Bullock shared the news with close friends like Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, as it became harder for her to handle everything alone.
After Randall’s death, his family confirmed that he had chosen to keep his ALS journey private, and those closest to him respected his wishes.
Afterward, Bullock took a break from public life to focus on her children and to grieve.

Now, Bullock is getting ready to return to acting with Practical Magic 2.
The sequel brings her back together with Nicole Kidman, as well as Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest. The movie is set to be released on September 10.
Bullock’s recent comments give a rare glimpse into what was happening in her life during the years she was mostly out of the Hollywood spotlight.
